Aruba Traffic Rules — Complete Study Guide
Reglanan di Trafico Aruba · Reglas de Tránsito Aruba · Verkeersregels Aruba
Master Aruba's traffic rules for the theory exam. This guide covers every major topic: right of way, roundabouts, speed limits, parking, lights, and special road situations.
Aruba's traffic rule system
Aruba's traffic laws are based on the Dutch traffic code (Wegenverkeerswet), which follows European conventions. If you are from North America, Latin America, or Asia, some rules — especially right-of-way and roundabout conventions — will be different from what you are used to.
The key is to learn the rules as Aruba applies them, not to compare them to your home country. Aruba Theory covers all rules with practice questions so you can apply them confidently in the real exam.
🔄Right of Way (Preferensia di Paso)
Preferencia di paso · Derecho de paso · Voorrangsregels
- ✓At unmarked intersections, traffic from the right has priority — unless a sign says otherwise.
- ✓A yellow diamond sign (priority road) means you have right of way over cross traffic.
- ✓A triangle pointing up (yield / geef voorrang) means you must give way.
- ✓The octagonal red STOP sign requires a full stop before yielding.
- ✓Emergency vehicles with sirens active always have priority — pull over to the right and stop.
🔁Roundabouts (Rotonde)
Rotonde · Rotondas · Rotondes
- ✓Traffic already inside the roundabout has priority over traffic entering.
- ✓You must yield to traffic from your left when entering a roundabout.
- ✓Use your right indicator when exiting the roundabout.
- ✓Do not change lanes inside a roundabout unless it is clearly marked.
- ✓Roundabout rules in Aruba follow the Dutch/European convention — different from some countries.
💨Speed Limits
Velocidad maximo · Límites de velocidad · Snelheidslimieten
- ✓Built-up area (residential/urban): 50 km/h unless otherwise posted.
- ✓Outside built-up areas: 80 km/h unless otherwise posted.
- ✓Signs can lower the limit (many roads are posted at 40 or 60 km/h): the posted sign always applies.
- ✓Residential zones (woonerf / living street): 15 km/h — pedestrians have priority.
- ✓Speed limit signs are round with a red border and the speed number in the centre.
🅿️Parking Rules
Reglanan di parkeer · Reglas de estacionamiento · Parkeerregels
- ✓Never park within 5 metres of an intersection, crossing, or fire hydrant.
- ✓A blue circle with a red cross (no parking) means parking is always prohibited there.
- ✓A blue circle with a red diagonal line (no stopping) means you may not stop at all.
- ✓Park in the direction of traffic — not facing oncoming vehicles.
- ✓Parking on the pavement (sidewalk) is prohibited unless a sign specifically allows it.
💡Lights and Visibility
Luznan y visibilidad · Luces y visibilidad · Verlichting en zichtbaarheid
- ✓Headlights are required at night, in tunnels, and when visibility is reduced.
- ✓Use low beam (dimlichten) in built-up areas and when meeting oncoming traffic.
- ✓Fog lights may only be used when visibility is seriously reduced by fog, rain, or dust.
- ✓Hazard lights (alarmlichten) are for emergencies and breakdowns — not for parking or rain.
- ✓Daytime running lights (DRL) do not replace full headlights at night.
🚶Pedestrians and Cyclists
Peatonnan y ciclistanan · Peatones y ciclistas · Voetgangers en fietsers
- ✓You must yield to pedestrians at marked pedestrian crossings.
- ✓Pedestrians have absolute priority at zebra crossings — slow down when approaching them.
- ✓When turning, always yield to cyclists and pedestrians who have priority.
- ✓Do not park or stop on cycling paths.
- ✓Give cyclists at least 1 metre of space when overtaking.
