What is the Aruba driving theory exam?
The Aruba driving theory exam (examen teorico / rijbewijs theorie) is a mandatory written test that every driver must pass before taking the practical driving exam in Aruba. It tests your knowledge of traffic rules, road signs, and road safety according to Aruba's traffic law.
The exam is administered by the Bureau Examen Rijbewijzen (BER), located at Dominicanessenstraat 33, Oranjestad (☎ +297 527 3078). You book your exam with BER by email; the hours, cost and what to wear are below.

- Open
- Monday to Friday, 08:00–12:00 and 13:00–16:00.
- Book
- By email. Put the service in the subject (for a first exam: “Inscribi pa examen - prome biaha”) and give your name, surname and phone number. The government site also mentions arranging it at the office.
- Cost
- First exam AWG 90. Re-exam AWG 45.
- Exam day
- The theory exam starts at 08:00 sharp.
- Dress
- Dress neatly: no slippers, shorts or short skirts.

After you pass: your licence card
You apply for the card at the Census office (Dienst Burgerlijke Stand en Bevolkingsregister), by appointment, at Schoolstraat 2 or L.G. Smith Boulevard 66. The licence is valid for 5 years. Bring:
- a valid ID (Aruban cedula or passport)
- an AWG 8 stamp (plakzegel) from Post Aruba
- the doctor’s form, approved by your doctor (AWG 16 at the post office; valid for 3 weeks)
- AWG 70

Who needs to take the Aruba theory exam?
- ✓Young people (17–18 years old) applying for their first driver's license in Aruba.
- ✓New residents who need to convert a foreign driver's license to an Aruban license.
- ✓People whose Aruban license expired or was revoked and need to reapply.
- ✓Anyone upgrading from a moped license (category AM) to a full car license (category B).
- ✓Foreign license holders from countries whose licenses are not automatically accepted in Aruba.

All warning, regulatory, and informational signs used in Aruba (Dutch-based system)
Priority at intersections, roundabouts, and priority road rules
Where, when, and how long you may park in Aruba
Urban, rural, and special zone speed limits in Aruba
When to use headlights, fog lights, and hazard lights
Rules for overtaking safely, prohibited zones, and lane discipline
Safe following distance, road hazards, and defensive driving principles
Emergency vehicles, pedestrian crossings, cyclists, and school zones
Languages available for the exam
The Aruba theory exam is available in Papiamento, Dutch, English, and Spanish. Choose the language you feel most comfortable with — understanding the rules clearly matters more than which language you take the exam in.
Aruba Theory is available in all four languages, so you can study in the same language you plan to use for the real exam.
Steps to take the Aruba theory exam
- 1Book your exam with BER
Email ber@kparuba.com with “Inscribi pa examen - prome biaha” in the subject and your name, surname and phone number, or ask at the office at Dominicanessenstraat 33, Oranjestad (☎ +297 527 3078, Mon–Fri 8:00–12:00 and 13:00–16:00). The first exam costs AWG 90. Ask BER what to bring when you book.
- 2Study all exam topics
Focus on traffic signs, right-of-way rules, roundabouts, parking, and speed limits. These topics appear most frequently on the exam. Use Aruba Theory to study all topics systematically.
- 3Practice with independent simulations
Use practice sessions to review the rules, work through different situations, and get used to answering under time pressure. ArubaTheory practice is for preparation and is not the official exam.
- 4Confirm your exam date with BER
When you feel prepared, confirm your official exam date with BER by email or at the office. The theory exam starts at 08:00 sharp, so plan to arrive early and dress neatly.
- 5Take the exam prepared
On exam day, read each question carefully and follow the instructions from the exam bureau. ArubaTheory can help you organize your study, but it cannot guarantee a result.
